Dining at Paon felt like stepping into a charming French bistro, where the attentive service from Eugene and the friendly hostess made the evening comfortable and welcoming. The scallops I had were cooked perfectly, and my date's rare filet mignon was melt-in-your-mouth delicious, complemented beautifully by a thoughtfully selected wine. Despite some street parking challenges and a lively nearby table, the warm goat cheese appetizer and the duck confit with orange rind left a lasting impression, making me eager to return and explore more of the menu.

Two stars due to poor service, misrepresentation, and extremely arrogant French "owner" who was extremely rude when I called with feedback. Patio dining is pleasant but was very noisy due to party next to us. We never saw the server after meal was served until 2/3 thru the meal - and she never asked how everything was. Had she done so, I would have said that the lobster she specifically said had only slight onion flavoring, is in fact, loaded with onion -you literally can't take a bite without getting mostly slivered onion mixed with tiny bits of minced lobster. (I had specifically asked whether there was onion in the dish when ordering.) When I told someone who claimed to be the owner the next day, he repeatedly interrupted me, berated and yelled at me, claimed to be the no. 1 restaurant (not true) and the slammed the phone on me. Paon also cheated us on the tip. After the meal we were told 15% added on parties over four - which would have been fine. But in fact, the bill reflected 18% on the total, including the tax (which isn't service and therefore not included in the tip). This type of attitude, service and regard for the customer is why France itself has a poor reputation among travelers. Many better choices in Carlsbad or go to Mr. As in San Diego which also is five stars, five diamonds.
