Kanno is the best sushi in New Orleans!

To Non Regular: Favoritism? Really? Are you 6? The owner has always been so nice to me and everyone around me especially at the sushi bar.

To Crna: I agree!

To Diner: You sound like the socially awkward one.

I agree, the sushi is the highest quality fish in the area. I have not found any better fish at any other sushi restaurant in the area. The fish is the freshest, the dishes are inspired, and I especially love the smoked salmon tuna neck.

However, there are some down sides to the dining experience. The location is horrible. The bar next door is constantly blaring its loud music and you can hear it through the walls. Overall, the building is a little run down. But hey, the fish is great.

The service is not that great. Sometimes you get greeted, sometimes you don't. Sometimes you get chocolates, sometimes you don't. I've seen people ask for the chocolates, but that is a little gauche. Sometimes the server is busy kissing up to another table, sometimes the staff has trouble understanding English.

Personally, I avoid the sushi bar because I don't want to get locked into a conversation with the owner. From what I've observed, he is a very nice guy.

So there you go. Grade A sushi, C service, C-location. No matter how many other sushi places I've tried, nothing comes close to the quality of fish at Kanno.

I dined at kanno for the first time a few months back. I went on numerous recommendations from friends and coworkers. I felt very welcome, and found the service to be quite good. The sushi is EXCELLENT! I have returned many times since and plan on being a regular!

Take it from someone who has eaten sushi everywere.
I used to visit kanno regularly so this is not a one time experience. The sushi is good and doesn't make you sick like some places, however it's a far cry from the best as other reviews have claimed.
I always noticed how the chef/owner talked to others at the sushi bar but never really acted as if I was there. After todays experience I will never go there again. I noticed the favortism last time I visited. On the last visit my bill had been mischarged in my favor and instead of charging me 30$ they charged me 3$. As an honest person I told them about the mistake and they fixed it and were pleased with my honesty. However, on the same token as I looked around others were receiving little chocolate deserts that are free with the meal. I did not receive that and asked why. The waiter brought us out one only after we asked for it. I thought maybe it was an oversight and didn't think much more about it. A few weeks later I went back and sat at the sushi bar. After sitting down I realized I had not been greeted by anyone upon entering the restaurant. After I received my food I asked a waitress, not my waiter, for some ponzu sauce. I am not sure if this person can even speak because she did not say a word, but did bring me the sauce I asked for huffily. She then cleaned up the table and when my friend tried to see if he had any tea left she slammed it on the tray after he handed it to her. Very bad attitude and we had done nothing to deserve the rudeness. We then asked for a box and she brought it out and shoved it at me. I noticed the regulars next to me eating their little free desert. The reason I know these are regulars is the owner/chef talked to them the entire time they were there. After packing my lunch into a box I was promptly brought the check before asking for it. My friend then asked where is our chocolate desert that everyone seems to get except us. After the second time of not receiving this desert I knew it was intentionaly not given to us. Others were told thank you upon leaving and to us not a word was spoken.
It is fine they think they do not need my business since they will never again get it or my recommendation. The most disturbing part about it all was that it felt so high school as if because I was not part of the "regular" crowd I was invisible. I am sure people who know what I am talking about can attest to never wanting to feel that in the adult life let alone pay to feel that way.
I felt unwelcomed the entire time I was there.
Go to Gimchi instead, where the sushi tastes better and everyone is part of the in crowd.
Pros: sushi not bad Go to Gimchi Instead and be treated fairly
Cons: new customers are not welcome
