I met a girl at Shifty's who was captivated by Outlaw Whitey Wayne and the 78s, a band that played old LP-sized records at a fast pace with a scratchy sound. She shared three songs for me to listen to that would help me understand the band, including one with a familiar melody that brought tears to my eyes as the bartender announced closing time. We ended the evening by singing a song together about a teenage star who gave up wealth and fame to return to the boy next door who worked at the candy store, a story with a poignant moral that we discussed at length.
