Out of STATE visitors. 1ST time experience, and last. Will never be back. Restaurant came highly recommended, reviews looked amazing...But...
Waitress, Amy, was horrible. Not attentive and not familiar with the menu. Many "need to find out" from her. Had many issues with multiple returns to the table at 10-20 minute intervals between kitchen issues and Amy not knowing. This went on for almost an hour. Multiple things not available even though it was on the menu. Couldn't guarantee gluten contamination between meals. Guests that arrived after us got their food well before us. After waiting 1 hr and 18 minutes for the food, We asked for the bill for just the drinks and appetizer we received because we had a show to get to. Not unreasonable, and was told "No problem". 15 minutes AFTER requesting our bill, the food comes out.The Waitress rushed to throw the food on the table, while we were telling her to stop and reminded her we cancelled our order and asked for the bill 15 minutes ago for the items we consumed that were at the table. Suddenly, it ALL needs to be paid for because the servers tray touched the table. We again, told the waitress we canceled the meal 15 minutes ago and only wanted the bill for the 1 leomande and the wings. Waitress makes a scene in a room full of guests, yelling at us. She then brings the manager over yelling, and the Manager makes a scene immediately claiming that we're trying to skip on the bill and threatens to call cops. I honestly should have asked he call the cops, but we needed to be somewhere. After trying to explain multiple times we were not trying to skip, we could have walked out if we wanted to skip, the manager decides that he's going to "graciously" discount the bill for food we cancelled 15 minutes before it came out, as if that was doing anyone a favor. We could not take the food with us as we did not have a place to store it or heat it up. We were visiting from out of STATE!

The service was absolutely APPALLING! The treatment from staff was disgraceful. I'm embarrassed for the owner of this establishment.

It should not have taken almost an hour and a half from my reservation (we showed up a few minutes prior to the reservation too) to get the food brought out after we wanted to leave. The staff should not have created such a scene, and treat us like criminals.

It looked like the room we were in had white cameras. I do hope the owner sees this and reviews the footage. I paid $55 cash for 1 lemonade for myself and a $12.95 wings appetizer for my guest.

If this is the proper way to run a business, shame on everyone involved.

I've been going to J. R. Maxwell & Co. since they opened in 1979. I've always liked their quiche and their clam chowder, as well as their daily soup specials. Perhaps the dessert that I've ordered the most is the strawberry shortcake with vanilla ice cream, but Mary Ann's
creme brulee is also a favorite. Mary Ann and her husband own the restaurant. I was just trying to remember today whether "J. R. Maxwell & Co" opened before or after "The Clipper Trade." I found my answer online. "The Clipper Trade" opened in 1981. For those that might not know, it was a gift shop and they had nautical gifts as well as many other things. In earlier times at "J. R. Maxwell & Co.", a woman named Patti Stone was one of their waitresses. She and her husband, Jack, opened their own business, "Island Teak" on Route 1 in Wiscasset and it was open for 22 years. More recently, I've been ordering the 8-oz. sirloin steak with a baked potato and either the vegetable of the day or a cup of soup. I like the tomato with basil. I also like plain fettucini with garlic butter as a substitute for the potato. I like the pan blackened salmon, steamed clams, fried clams or shrimp, boiled lobster and many other things. I've been a customer long enough to know what I like on the menu. It's very pretty in the evening, especially with the tiffany lamps hanging from the ceiling. At Christmas time, you can see the lights all along Front St. when you sit near a window. These are some of the businesses I've frequented over the years in Bath, although some of them have come and gone.
1) Front Street Deli
2) The Clipper Trade
3) Yankee Artisan
4) Magnolia
5) Pollyana's Antiques
6) Now You're Cooking
7) Springer's Jewelers
8) Wilson's Drug Store
9) Country Farm Furniture
10) Open Door Books
11) House of Logan

My husband's Prime rib was ordered rare and was delivered late and well done. Broiled seafood left me feeling sick. Wait staff was slow and did not care. I had to ask for the bill twice had to find the waitress again to give her the credit card. Don't waste your time or money on Maxwells.

Great restaurant in downtown Bath. Lots of homemade items. The soups are wonderful. I like the Cheeseburger soup. The clam chowder is rated the best in New England. Specials include their famous Roast Prime Rib of Beef on Friday and Saturday and 2-fer on Wednesdays. Its been in buisness for 30 years WOW
