The sushi here is always so fresh and tasty, with a good variety of rolls to choose from. Ordering ahead is a good idea to avoid any long waits, but the food is definitely worth it.

I grew up on fresh fish and sushi in Hawaii, and this is definitely the best, freshest sushi in the South Bay. It's more of a take out place, since there are only three stools in there. The husband and wife team are LOVELY people, and you get the sense that this is more of a labor of love/art form than a money machine. Perhaps because the orders can take up to 45 minutes, on one occasion an hour, and they are closed Friday and Saturday. Interesting business strategy. But these are forgivable, perhaps even charming, in light of the quality and consistency. The "Spicy Tuna Crunchy" roll is outstanding. I don't usually love spicy tuna roll, but this one is amazing. It's not filled with creamy sauce to cover up substandard fish--the tuna is fresh and actually spicy. Imagine that. It's rolled in crisp panko flakes and artfully drizzled with a modest amount of enhancing pink sauce, that again, is actually spicy. And the "Vegetable Tempura Roll" (with japanese pumpkin and asparagus) is not a throw away item for the occasional vegetarian patron. It's is a very worthwhile order for carnivores and omnivores alike. If you care more about saving your pennies for sake, cheap pitchers of beer and having a raucous time then you do about fine sushi then go to Paradise on the Hermosa Pier. And I acquiesce to the common notion that Sushi Sei is pretty good, especially if you want to sit down and have a lingering meal. But from the bottom of my hungry heart, I think this place is, hands down, better. And who knows, maybe if enough people discover this sparkling little gem they'll decide it's worthwhile to open up for us on Fridays and Saturdays after all.
