What a lovely experience this was! We had driven all the way from San Clemente to see if what Huell Howser had said about this little gem was actually true. When we first arrived, I wasn't sure, since it sits in a strip mall and looks to be very ordinary at best, from the outside. But...once you open the door and enter this little jewel, an adventure begins that will surely beguile your culinary senses and leave you grateful for one of those experiences that we so seldom come upon in this rather homogenous world.
Absolutely everything we ate, was delicious! The soup of the day (spinach) was a 10! The salad, delightful. We are vegetarians, so we opted for the vegetarian plate which offered both the saurkraut-mushroom perogi, and the potato cheese perogi, surrounded by some of the most delicously prepared vegetables that we have ever tasted, as well as dumplings. (mushrooms, carrots, soybeans and corn). I normally love mushrooms, but to get me to rave about the rest of these, you need to really provide something special, and 'they did"! Now, all that was left to enjoy was the (included) dessert, which was velvety and sumptous.
The lovely couple that own & operate this establishment, move quickly to accomodate their patrons & provide a fun and interesting little enclave to capture your attention and improve your mood. Your eyes land upon uplifting quotations & suprising bits of subtle humor on the walls, as you enjoy this "all about the food" excellent adventure!!

Overall, the food, value and service of Polka is great. It's a small, homey restaurant with ecclectic decor. The restaurant is almost always full on the weekends, but well worth the wait. The booth tables are a tight squeeze (especially if you're a bit on the hefty side), but once you get past the little quirks, you'll become a fan of Polka's!
