If you're in Ames, you have to check out Tip Top Lounge for a drink and a taste of local tradition. The friendly crowd, great prices, and unique atmosphere make it a memorable stop, especially on game days when the chili and camaraderie are unbeatable.

I wanted to like this little dive bar in downtown Ames, but the service there is awful. It wasn't even busy but I stood at the bar for several minutes trying to get a beer, but the bartender was too busy talking to her friend to serve me, although we had eye contact more than once. FYI: I'm 41 years old and was not impolite, so there is no reason she shouldn't have waited on me immediately. The place smells bad too, like a wet basement.
