Growing up in Anchorage in the 1950s, I have vivid memories of this longstanding establishment that has worn many names over the decades, including the Federal Bar and the Golden Dollar. It remains a lively hangout where locals gather, offering cheap drinks, pool tables, and a no-nonsense atmosphere guarded by a big bouncer at the door. Stepping inside feels like stepping back in time to a rough-and-ready era of Anchorage, where friendliness and a shared love of simple pleasures like a cold Rainier beer bring people together.

This iconic establishment with deep roots in Alaska's history has seen many names through the years, remaining a beloved spot for locals and old-timers. Despite its unassuming appearance, it offers a genuine experience with affordable drinks and a welcoming atmosphere that appeals to a diverse crowd. A visit to this unpretentious bar on 4th Avenue provides a glimpse into Alaska's authentic charm, making it a worthwhile stop for those seeking a true taste of the local scene.
