Not the Las Palmas of old by a long shot. Same decor; not the same menu. Happy, energetic waitstaff which was nice. Condensed menu. Lacking carne asada as a stand-alone entree is a no-no in my small book of mexican go-to dishes; no such item: sorry.
Well, I dove in and asked the waiter if carne asada was available in any offered menu item; He pointed to some items which were not the same but had some close similarities-not any way the same at all.
I ordered; my wife ordered a vegetarian burrito.
Bottom Line: White rice with mixed vegetables packed into a cup and turned over to form a mound, no yellow rice or authentic Mexican rice preparation as one might except; re- fried beans seemed to be acceptable; steak on the $20 combination was ordered medium. It was red in center (good), but it was so hard,(chewy)that cutting the item with the grain/against the grain made no difference whatsoever. It was not only tough, but it had no marination and did not seem possible to have been cooked, fried, grilled, whatever in the short time frame. The grill marks indicated a deep grill frying process but I have some questions concerning how that could be possible. My spouse's burrito was filled with vegetables which had the visual and tactile characteristics of frozen (I am not alluding that they were, in fact frozen, I am only stating that it was something which caused us to wonder how this food item could be prepared in such an expedited manner. I make no assumptions; I am only presenting the physical and tactile characteristics of our dining experience.
When the waiter came by to inquire our experience with the food, I said it was not good; too tough and no taste. I also asked for boxed to go thinking my twenty-four year old son would eat this since he eats anything. The waiter replied that maybe I should order the steak more rare next time (I ordered the steak red in the middle at his suggestion); I usually order all my steaks medium rare. At no time after we stated that the entrees were not good did he offer any optional suggestions (i.e. bills adjustment; other dishes, etc.).
Very dissapponted? You bet. This is the very reason why I hate to venture in trying out new eating spots. This shot my Friday and let me with leftover reminders of a $35 mistake.
And my wife continues to harp on the fact that we wouldn't know a good dining place from one which is not (a good dining place) if we didn't experiment and try new places (so that we could discover said shortcomings). As John Kass would say, "When the politicians speak, the donkeys break wind".
Stay away from this restaurant unless you have taste buds which are nuked beyond normal tolerances.
