review_stars 07/14/2023 - Local Staple is Gone
Been coming to Jake's for almost 30 years. It was the destination of choice in Lower Township for a delicious, hearty, yet affordable meal. This was the place we all would come together for celebrations of achievements, graduations, birthdays, and even mourning.

Writing this review sincerely brings a tear to my eye and breaks my heart. While the restaurant was definitely in need of some updates and TLC (like it deserved), this once magical spot has been gentrified into a Cape May sports bar. The seats were uncomfortable, there was a drippy melted candle or something on the table, no privacy; all seating is open concept, no booths, giant television screens broadcasting loud programming, and the music playing over the loud speaker was an explicit song.

The food suffers the most from this. Portion sizes have been cut to well over half and everything on the menu skyrocketed in price to cover the cost of the destruction of an integral part of many local's (and out-of-townees!) favorite spot away from the b.s on the islands.

The soup lacks the flavor it used to, and I received a small cup that was half full and was eaten in 3 spoonfuls. $6.00

The side salads are no longer substantial. They couldn't even put a full cherry tomato on the plate. I received a half of a tiny cherry tomato, 3 or 4 pieces of lettuce, a half cucumber and 1 carrot shred. Complimentary dinner rolls are gone too. You used to get a basket of 4 or 5, now its one per person.

Calamari rings were not crispy and tasted like they were deep fried in sweet funnel cake batter and had a whole bunch of pointless, disgusting pickled vegetables thrown on top and the whole mess was drenched in a flavorless spicy sauce. $16.00

Fried flounder was a tiny filet and was bland when it used to have a lovely crunch and pop of lemon. My husband got a fried flounder sandwich and the person who made it did not even put the contents of the sandwich in the bun. It was sloppily thrown on a plate. The filet was ripped in half and there was also a piece of cheese lazily melted on the top which ruined the sandwich entirely. Melted cheese on fried flounder, or any fish sandwich that is not a McDonald's Filet O Fish? $28.00 and $22

Our server let dishes and glasses stack up and remain on the table for extended times, despite walking past our table multiple times. Did not offer to refresh any beverages and was not personable in the slightest. The whole staff from before is completely gone and either there is a new chef who doesn't know whats going on or the old chef is still there and has been completely demoralized and hates his job. What a shame.

I have multiple Jake's gift cards that I will not be using because I will never patronize this establishment ever again. I moved an hour away and drove down for the sole purpose of going to Jake's to get a meal and help ease some pain I was experiencing and remember old memories of dinners with family and with dearly departed family members.

If I want to get good seafood nearby and still get the atmosphere and my actual money's worth, I'll go down to the Lobster House.

Nothing I wrote here was an embellishment. This is what happens when you forget who your core customers are when you lose touch with reality.

Had dinner with my daughter last night. The clam chowder was better than the Lobster House’s., The blackened salmon
with shrimp, spinach, mushroomsandv in a great sauce (the special) was fantastic. Our server was so great. She was constantly checking in us and super sweet! Excellent food and service!!

Meals were delicious, promptly prepared and perfectly cooked.
The applesauce was phenomenal, didn’t expect it to be that great but it almost stole the show.
We will absolutely be dining there again.
Thank you.

Excellent food. I have had everything on the menu. Wish Jake's was open for take out during the corona virus pandemic.

There's one thing VillasGuy always looks forward to when he's going out to eat on a Saturday night, Jake's Prime Rib! VillasGuy also happens to love the Chicken Parmesan sandwich, and the nachos! Great atmosphere and service too.
