A friend and I went to this restaurant just to sit and have some dessert. I asked my waiter if the dessert I wanted to order had flour in it (since I have celiac disease), and he responded no. When it came out, it clearly had a layer of cake in it, and I asked him to double check to make sure it did not have flour. Meanwhile, the dessert he had brought out for my friend was completely wrong--she ordered apple cobbler, and he brought her cheesecake.
Instead of offering me another choice, the manager came over and yelled at me, trying to make me feel that I was stupid. He told me that the most basic ingredient in cake is flour. I tried to explain the situation, but he would not let me get a word in edge wise. I eventually managed to tell him that I had specifically asked if the dessert had flour. I also explained that there is such a thing as flourless cake, and he told me that in his 25 years in food service he had never heard of such a thing.
Then, I was about to take a bite of the filling of my friend's cheesecake, and he came over and yelled at us more, telling us that cheesecake has flour in it. I've never seen a cheesecake recipe for the filling that has flour in it, but I didn't want to argue any more. My friend tried to stand up for me though, so then he proceeded to yell at her.
Its hard enough to find food that I can eat as a celiac, and this experience was so unnecessarily horrible. The waitstaff and the management that I had interactions with at the Riviera Cafe were uncommonly ignorant, and I would definitely not recommend it to anyone.
