My goat cheese salad had almost no goat cheese! The total amount didn't even cover my entire fork. WTF?!?! When I told the staff they said that was the correct amount. Ha! Never ever again. Never!

they say they deliver but always refuse when i call with an order.
their menu says they are open until 10 pm but when i got there tonight at 9:45 they said they were closed and that they have been closing at 9:30 for several months.
when i asked for a new to go menu, the menu still stated that they were open until 10 and that they deliver.
how irritating.

The food at Basic is very good - and I like stopping by for lunch or brunch - despite the change in great service recently. The prices are a little steep for the amount of food offered, and it's usually smart to bring something to do while waiting for your order. When the music isn't blasting too loudly, it's a nice corner spot to work, read, or just people watch. Considering the lack of competition in the area, I guess there's little incentive to improve. The place is still regularly very busy.

Not sure exactly when owners changed, but I've been working in the neighborhood for almost 3 years now. The 1st year, I'd walk in for coffee and leave in about 2 minutes. One of the guys working there would quickly acknowledge my entrance and as soon as I told him what size I wanted, there was my cup of coffee with perfect flavoring...a few drops of half and half and I was out the door and in caffeine heaven. A few months later, owners must have changed and my guy was gone. Since then, the coffee taste went down from an 11 to a 2 and no one ever got the flavor ratio right...not to mention I had to wait 5 minutes for the genius to stand there and measure out the flavoring, which was nowhere near enough. On the other hand, most other coffee spots Downtown are fairly mediocre to say the very least, so perhaps Basic does still serve "the best [non-franchise] coffee Downtown", but I'll take a tea from there from now on!

Basic is on its third owner. It was excellent under the original owner, and quite good under the previous owner. Under the current owner, the quality has declined to the point that I never go there, at all. When Basic first opened it was a wonderful addition to the neighborhood. The loss of a quality eatery is very upsetting.
