Vara's was rated by the New York Times as one of the best Mexican restaurants in the USA. There was a full page article framed on the wall to attest to her knowledge in the kitchen. I am yet to find any Mexican kitchen that measures up to her, from one coast to the other they are not even close. She was nice enough to spend about 20 minutes with us at our table talking about cooking in general and what makes good Mexican food. I would love to know just a few of her recipes to share with the world.

Vera's was great. I know it's been closed for a while, that's sad. Always a nice view and a big open dining area. Food was great New Mexican and Vera herself would come out in a big old dress and treat everyone like royalty. Never saw too many people eating in there either. A nice slice of Old New Mexico on the trip from D-town to S-fe, nice stop at the halfway point on a long lonesome drive.

Most bland food I have ever eaten!

Absolutely loved the food there! Fried bread in a basket, and wonderful chili verde! Breakfast, lunch and dinner, we went to Viva Vera's whenever we were close to Chama in our travels. Warm, friendly waitresses, and Vera was so welcoming to us. If I am ever in the area again, I sure hope Vera's is still open!
