When I moved here seven years ago, I searched and searched for a place where I could find Puerto Rican food and get a taste of home in Austin. Finally, I found Chago’s. There are a few other places that have popped up since, but this place is the mother of Caribbean food in Austin. Coquito during the holiday season, mofungo and pastelles- arroz y gandules... how can you go wrong? The only item that is slightly different to me is their alcapurrias; I think chago’s version resembles more of an empanada- but they are still delicious. This is a mom and pop place, don’t expect a fancy 5 star dining atmosphere- expect a neighborhood, family owned restaurant that is comfortable and unassuming. But that’s what make this place great, it doesn’t pretend to be anything than what it is, and don’t be surprised to be served by the owners themselves; these are hard working people who are not afraid to get their hands dirty. I’m so grateful to have found this gem and hope they make it through this rough time, Covid has destroyed so many places that I love- my business is no exception. Go here and support an amazing place, with amazing food and incredible people.
