The Santa Maria Valley doesn't have many restaurants I can recommend,
but I keep returning to the Pantry for respectable food and good value for the money.
The service is close to superb, always friendly and surprisingly prompt.
Only once in many visits have I wondered when my meal would come.
Menu choices are varied, and those I have tried have been worthy,
although one dish disappointed me flavour-wise.
If you like French dip, try one here. The au jus is SO much better than in most places ---
it's not just salty slop; it actually contains some meat particles and tastes good.
Pork chops (I prefer plain rather than breaded; you can have them either way here) are thin but tasty.
The pot roast is fall-off-the-fork tender comfort on a plate.
1950s rock 'n' roll may not be everyone's favourite background music (I rather like it
in measured doses) but at least it's not the same dreck you hear in supermarkets.
At times it's a bit too loud; on other occasions you might think it could be turned up a little.
The decor is kitchen-y but not kitschy or "shabby".
Last but not least, the men's restroom may not be perfect, but it is kept reassuringly clean.
(I haven't been advised about the women's.)

We eat here frequently and love the food and the service. Great prices and a good atmosphere.
