During a road trip, my companions and I found ourselves in Vicksburg, MS, one evening. Surprisingly, the Klondyke was one of the few local spots still open, and we ended up having a fantastic time with karaoke, friendly locals, and a variety of local drinks. Our visit to Vicksburg turned out to be a highlight of our yearly trip, and we're already looking forward to returning.

The Klondyke trading post was established in 1896 by a would be gold rush prospector.
One story is that he was on his way to hunt gold in the Klondike. Another is that he was coming back after failing to find gold. Either way he saw the activity around the Glass Bayou area and declared that he was going to make his on little Klondike. And he did, even if he spelled it with a y. The trading post has now been in business in the same location for over 100 years.

It is not a fancy dining establishment. The decor is best described as old and antique eclectic. The door handles on the front double doors are made with two old double barrel shotguns. There is a very limited menu which often means a few things done very well. That is the case here. Fried green tomatoes topped with a sauce of crawfish tails can be ordered as a side (at extra charge), an appetizer or an entree. We love fried green tomatoes and these are as good as any we have eaten and better than most. There is also a very good catfish creme creole with crawfish tails. Their famous $10 steak has recently become a $12 steak. Still a great tasting bargain. Sides are extra. Most at $3. There is a selection of hamburgers, sandwiches and salads. Dessert is one of the most unusual things we have ever had. Select a snack cake such as Little Debbie's, Hostess or Rice Crispy Treats and the chef will deep fry it and serve it with various sauces and toppings which vary depending on whim and what is available. Our outstanding waitress took our selections to the kitchen and asked what would be done with them. How about deep fried Rice Crispy Treats with caramel sauce and peaches or Hostess chocolate cupcakes with caramel, chocolate and raspberry sauce and hard frozen vanilla ice cream with its own light batter. There is also a very popular bar with a wide selection of beers.

The Klondyke has won numerous local best-ofs awards. It has also been featured by Andrew Zimmern on the Appetite For Life program.

Okay, so I ordered a Grilled Chicken Salad. Sounded good enough, the problem was, there was barley half a salad in the foam tray. I paid 12 dollars for maybe two palm-fulls of lettuce, cheese, and maybe 6 small pieces of chicken. The 1/2 pound steaks are 10 dollars for crying out load, I just paid over that for majority lettuce. Was honestly not satisfied, my lettuce was brown and rotting on a few of the ends which is okay, I can just pick it off (which I did), the blue cheese didn't taste like it was fresh, and I didn't feel like I got what I paid for. The only good thing that came from my purchase was the chicken was cooked to a perfection.
I might consider going back because they do make pretty good steak, but they lack at appearance, presentation, and quantity.

We have eaten at Klondyke's Resturant several times. The steaks and loaded potatoes are excellent and excellent prices. The catfish with crawfish sauce overlaid is the best you could get. The fried green tomatoes are the best we have ever had and all a fraction of the prices you pay at other restaurants. Go eat there and you will love it. Happy hour is 3 to 7. Can't beat it we plan to go eat there more.
