Rick's American Cafe, also known as The Riv, The Planet, and Bilbos, was the heart of my youth in the late 80s to mid-90s with shows from Lansing, AA, Kzoo, Detroit, and Chicago mixed in. It's where I caught some of the best gigs of my life, from bands like Hannibals, Bop (H), Verve P, Water for the, TMIW, and more. The dark basement, the long stairs, pitchers of Old Style Black n Tans, and the vibrant crowd made it an unforgettable spot for meeting people, dancing, and having a great time. It may not be everyone's cup of tea, but for me, Rick's will always hold a special place in my heart for the memories and the wild energy it brought to my college days.
