We landed at El Palmar by accident. We were headed to the Mexican place next door and found it closed. Just as well. It was a pleasant surprise to find some pretty authentic (best as this Southern girl can tell) Mexican flavors. I ordered cheese enchiladas from the lunch menu and was kicking myself for not having tried something more interesting. These were the best I've ever had, real Chihuahua cheese with a spicy kick - I tasted jalapeno - and fresh sweet onions on the side. Our meals came with two fresh-tasting salsas; one small, very spicy chili-based salsa and one milder, with excellent flavor and fresh cilantro. Both were good, and the chunky, fresh guacamole was terrific. My friend had chicken flautas, which were bursting with tender chicken and, again, fresh. I could tell our entrees were made after we ordered, with the exception of rice and beans, which were typical of most every Mexican place in town, but fine.
Service was friendly, food came out a little slower than usual for lunchtime which bothered us not at all, considering it was cooked to order. We were gawking at other diners' selections and found items that looked delicious and interesting, and most of their offerings are pictured on their menu. Sometimes I need that to help me decide. Someone was having a horchata that looked wonderful and icy on a hot day; I have read elsewhere that they're good there. We will be back and tell friends.
