We walked in late, with few other choices open in Dalhart. Immediately we got dirty looks as the servers arranged tables for our family of six. The place looked dingy and not very clean, but we thought it might be one of those "hole in the wall" classics. My wife went to the bathroom and came out out whispering, "awful." (I've always thought a dirty restaurant bathroom is a sure predictor of a filthy kitchen.) The woman at the table next to us whispered, "don't try the lemon pie, it's like rubber." We inquired about the entrees, and she wrinkled her nose. That's when things went from bad to awful. The server tipped a full glass of water onto the back of my nine-year old daughter (who, by the way, happens to be a beautiful adopted Chinese girl.) Instead of saying "sorry," she just smirked and said, "I knew that would happen sooner or later." No apology whatsoever. Walked away. My daughter's back and bottom were soaked. At this point, we started debating an early departure. The server overheard us and started shouting at us! Insisting that she'd said "sorry" over the assurances of my whole family, she then, absurdly, told us in a loud voice that she had the right to refuse to serve us! At this point, we had done nothing but debate in whispers whether to leave! Needless to say, we did just that. We went to another establishment in Dalhart, where an ex-Martha's employee identified our accuser as Martha's daughter-in-law-with-a-major attitude. The person also assured us that we'd dodged a bullet, as the kitchen was filthy. The rest of the evening, trying to shake off the awful experience, we couldn't help but wonder--was the bizarre reaction motivated by racism? Our soaked daughter kept insisting that we forgive the woman, but our suspicions wouldn't leave. Either way, Martha's is a putrid hole to avoid like the plague.
