Very disappointed with the owner of Papillon Brasserie in West Reading, Pennsylvania, and his treatment of customers. When we arrived, he did not greet us with a "hello, welcome happy face", it was a stern face and a greeting of "do you have reservations?" We needed to add two more to our party, the owner was not cordial, he was angry. He was not accommodating to food allergies. One of our party members was coming from Morgantown and was having difficulty finding the restaurant. The owner was agitated by this situation and abruptly told us all to leave as he ripped the menus from our hands. The owner is a anger person with major control issues.
We were the only 5 people in the restaurant which seats 32 people, it did not appear to us that adding 2 people would create a problem since his restaurant was empty!

Overpriced food and horrible attitude by chef/owner. One would think that since this intimate place were owned and operated by the Chef, he would ensure his customer's were satisfied. Instead, just the opposite was true. I came in with a group of 6 and requested that the chef make the gnocchi (which were on the menu as part of an entree) be served as an appetizer, since I had raved about how good they were to my family, and this was their first experience here. Instead of kindly saying he couldn't accommodate that request, the Chef went into a tizzy and acted like pompous french -ssh-l-. He berated the waitress, loud enough so our table could hear, and made comments such as "this guy thinks he can write his own menu." Again, a simple no would have been fine. There was no need for him to go into a 10 minute rant. It made the whole meal very awkward and the waitress apologized profusely for his behavior, which is the only reason we did not get up and leave. He had no problem making the gnocchi and no problem charging us $32 for two very small plates. Furthermore, we ordered our chocolate souffle at the beginning of dinner and 2.5 hours later the chef informed the waitress that they were out of that, but he failed to replace the desert with another desert. The chef/owner works in an open-air kitchen and did not crack a smile the whole night. He continued to yell at the waitress for other things and made, what was to be a nice evening out, a very horrible night. I hope this guy learns to treat his staff and customers and realizes there is more to running a restaurant than providing good food.
