My First Real job~I worked at Arthur Treacher’s Fish and chips when I was 12 and 13 during my off time at school.
I walked to work and home every day, Long John Silvers does not compare to Arthur Treacher's~ Now Cod is cheap, it's time to Bring this restaurant back. I had to have my Parents sign papers for me to work at that age but I loved working there. The food couldn't get any better, we had the Fish with a special batter, we dipped the fish and Butterfly shrimp into a saltwater bath and then into the batter. We cooked it in huge peanut oil tanks, when the fish or shrimp floated to the top, it was done. We had what was called a Cabin boy Fish Sandwich, It had one piece of cod and we had these Guns like a spackling gun only bigger, wider, and longer. you pushed it and cheese whiz came out, we put a cheese whiz on the fish sandwich u could get with tarter sauce or if u didn't like Tarter sauce u just asked for us not to put it on there. The Chips were Awesome also cooked in the same peanut oil as the Fish until they floated and were light brown. We made up vats of coleslaw and the Coleslaw was really awesome. there were Combinations of fish dinners. two pieces of fish with chips and slaw Or 6 big butterfly shrimp chips and slaw, or a piece of fish and 3 butterfly shrimp, chips and slaw, or u could get the Cabin boy sandwich alone or as a meal with chips and slaw. As the fish and shrimp cooked some of the batters would come off just what was on more than enough and it would turn brown and float to the top and we had a huge handled wire mesh spoon-like to gather them up and let the oil go back into the tanks and we put them in a basket. Customers called those Crinkles and they loved those things but we threw them away, I m not sure why b/c people would ask if they could buy some. I gave them away. they were very tasty and really crunchy. I think they went under B/C they were Franchises and not really a chain like a burger king or McDonald's. Long john silvers was a Chain and their fish was terrible and still is compared to fish and chips. I ate at Long john silvers one time, the fish is old and has that fishy Taste, the cod Arthur Treacher’s Fish was caught cut into wedges and flash frozen and never had a fishy smell or taste it was fresh and flash frozen. I worked at the one at Fairfax Circle around the Corner from the 7/ 11 in Fairfax circle Virginia and we had a huge lunch and dinner crowd.
a man named David owned the Franchise and had a hard time finding good hard workers like me. He sold it to a guy named Dave, who sexually Harassed me every single day when I got off of work. He fired me B/C I wouldn't Comply with his demands, I was a little kid but a hard-working little kid that loved my job~ He was a sick man. I remember stopping at an Arthur Treacher’s somewhere else and I ordered a Cabin boy and they used sliced American cheese, it was Terrible. It just didn't compare to the Cheese Whiz squeezed out all over the fish. They also had Hush Puppies big ones, Everyone loved those, I was never a big Hushpuppy fan. I would love to see the old, Arthur Treacher’s make a come back. In fact, I would love to run one. Have my own Franchise as I know what the Customers loved. I did everything in that store from opening to closing, running the cash Register, Cooking, and throwing orders together. mopping and cleaning. This small town we have here in N.W. Arkansas would be a Perfect place and really needs new restaurants, The Population has grown and one Sonic doesn't cut it.
