09/22/2010 - Sharon
My boyfriend and I decided to go to Mr. M's for lunch today (9/22/2010 around 1:30 pm). We are both 30 year old African Americans. We walked inside of Mr. M's to find a gentleman sitting in a chair staring at a wall and a young woman with a baby in a stroller. No one greeted us so I was thought they were just patrons having lunch. We waited a minute thinking someone was going to come out from the back kitchen area to service us. No one ever came. So I asked the two people sitting if the restaurant was open. The young woman smiled and said "yes they are open" and my boyfriend asked the man if he was the manager of the place. The man answered but he wouldn't make eye contact with us. So my boyfriend asked proceeded to ask about the menu items and the man that worked there said "what kind of food do you want?" with an attitude. My boyfriend said "You’re really giving us some crappy service" and the man responded by saying "Well we don't serve everybody". We left the business and went to Delvecio's Pizza across the street and I was very upset by this. The young woman that works there asked if we had been over to Mr. M's, we replied yes. She stated that it has been so many people (black people) that have gone over to Mr. M's and have left due to discrimination and racial comments and then they come over to Delvecio's Pizza speaking about what happened. The worker from Delvecio's stated that a woman went to Mr. M's and was waiting in line to order some food and there was a Caucasian person in front of her who ordered some food, paid and left. She went to the counter and ordered the same exact food purchase and the man charged her a higher price than he did for the Caucasian person. I feel highly disrespected and something needs to be done about Mr. M's. If he has a problem with African Americans, why would he put his location right in the heart of Ward's Corner in Norfolk where the population is majority African American? This is a travesty in 2010.
