So I'm dating myself but lived there around 1985, 1st time I walked in, on a Fri btw, the bartender said "haven't seen you before, you new to the area?", I responded yes, he asked if I had a business card, I gave him one he initialed it and responded "you now have a tab @ Matts Pub, welcome to Richmond" "Tabs are due on Fridays btw" he asked what I was having and gave me a beer and also informed me that "the 1st one is on the house to our regulars on Fridays" I also ate there on several occasions, the food was excellent and probably the best early bird value I had ever seen. I'm still not an early-birder but the prices were ridiculous. to good to pass up. Service was outstanding as well, waiters would replace your water glass halfway through the meal, exchange your napkin as well seemingly effortlessly and without hesitation, pretty upscale for a pub. They had a fist size "appetizer" called a "Hodge Podge", I still remember it, and still one of the best things I ever ate. Seafood, shrimp, crab, lobster flounder and scallops in an onion layer, surrounded with puff pastry, baked and served with something akin to a light Newburg sauce. A Mazing. Too bad it's gone nothing great or real good or anything for that matter lasts forever, but the times I spent there made new to the city life more bearable and are still have very fond memories. BTW am looking for that recipe, IF you have or come across it please reach out to my brother on Instagram @ https://www.instagram.com/smokehouse_84/ Thanks,
