I was on a trip around the Hill Country with a couple of out-of-staters and one of our day trips had to be to Leakey and all the incredibly scenic drives around there. I had been to the Leakey Feed Lot once a few years earlier and hadn't quit talking up the chicken-fried rib-eye. So often when you have a great first meal and talk it up and take someone there it never lives up to that first time. Not this time. It was even better. Talked to a local and it turns out the owner when I was first there had the place up for sale and was letting the quality slip. Apparently the new owners came in and it's their family business and they have really worked hard getting things up to a higher level again.
I had, of course, what I had the first time, what I can't seem to find anywhere else, the Chicken-Fried Rib-Eye. Easily the most delicious chicken-fried steak I have had in my life. No knife needed, cuts with a fork and melts in your mouth. I had the fries and the homemade mac & cheese for my sides and, seriously, it was the best mac & cheese I have ever had in my life. Cold beer, friendly service, a cool patio to hang out and eat, and wildly scenic roads leading out of Leakey in every direction. You just couldn't ask for more.
