Back in Oakland, I found myself stranded at a Valero in Merced, cashless and credit card-less, with nothing but a creepy soundtrack to keep me company. Just when I thought I'd have to barter my Christmas socks for gas, a kind stranger swooped in with a $20 bill, saving my night. On the bright side, I discovered a new Jimboy's in Clovis, converted a friend over tacos, and even got the owner to mail my wallet back to me-though I'm still mourning the $9 and some change that went missing!
