My favorite authentic Chinese restaurant in the Fair Oaks/ Citrus Heights area. Really!!

When I moved to Sac from the Bay Area six years ago, I despaired of finding a Chinese food restaurant to rival those I enjoyed in SF and the East Bay ... until I found Silver Dragon Restaurant in Citrus Heights. The discovery was a game-changer. My quest was over. I finally found what I was looking for! I can honestly say that I like Silver Dragon as much if not better than any Chinese food restaurant I’ve tried—in San Francisco or Berkeley or anywhere. I am NOT kidding.

Everything on the menu that I have tasted is very good to excellent, but in my opinion the best item by far is the hot & sweet General Tsu's Chicken. *OMG* it is so, so delicious! You’ve GOT to try it, experience it, for yourself. Tender, flavorful chicken pieces are breaded and fried to perfection so that they come out golden and crisp—not crunchy and never, ever hard. The chicken pieces are then smothered in a spicy brown sauce, which to me tastes like a rich, soy-based sauce with a touch of brandy or rum. Yum-uh-um! I should mention that this sauce contains an abundance of both chopped onion and green bell pepper, so if you don't care for either of these (I hate green bell pepper) tell your server to leave it out. They're more than happy to do it. (All of the wait staff are terrific—fast, cheerful, and always glad to do it “your way.”)

Over the years I’ve evolved a sort of ritual: I put the General Tsu's chicken (with lots of sauce) on top of plain steamed rice, and I get an order a of their outrageously tasty/juicy pot stickers (I believe they’re pork) to eat on the side. I’ve always eaten my pot stickers *with* my meal, and not as an appetizer beforehand: in my view they go much too well with the General Tsu's to split them up into courses. Tell your servers ahead of time if you’d like to do it this way (have both courses on your table at once), otherwise your pot stickers will arrive first and alone, and the rest of your food won’t appear until you put your utensils down and appear to be done.

Some folks love a beer with this meal—and I can imagine it’s very good--but me? I go for an ice cold Coke. I'm not sure what it is, but for some reason, I find it's the perfect accompanying beverage. The Cokes at Silver Dragon come in a can with a glass of ice; you pour the beverage into the glass yourself. Perfectly tasty, but there are no refills (obviously), and they charge about a buck (+/-) per can. So hey, it’s not exactly cheap (I really wish they had fountain drinks), but it's worth it in my opinion. Much better than hot tea alone. And I don't know about you but I *need* something cold & deliciously sweet to drink with intensely flavored food like this. Have tea with your fortune cookie later. ;^)

What can I say. To me Silver Dragon is %100 *YUM*. I’m so glad it exists! Without it, there would be nowhere around here for me to go for reliably excellent, first-rate Chinese cuisine. I'd have to drive 100 miles south every time I got the craving.
