Long live the original Southeast Asian Restaurant. It is no longer. I've been eating there since the opening in 1985 -- 27 years ago. When Joe & Chanthip sold the place ~5 years ago, the quality became sporadic, favorite specialities began disappearing with new so-so dishes added to the buffet. The owner after Joe & Chanthip sold the place recently. I may have missed an interim owner that may have happened earlier this year, 2012. However, I had the buffet under the new ownership yesterday. It's call The New Asia Restaurant. The owner said she'd just opened three weeks ago in Nov. Lunch was great. Much better than the declining food SE had been serving and better than the Viet-Thai Restaurant around the corner. Man am I gonna miss that spicy chicken and basil dish Joe used to make! That 4 stars is for the new restaurant if it wasn't obvious.

Do not go there... advertises online for 6.95 per person for buffet but went there and charged 7.95.

Also listed 30 different variety of food but most of the buffet container were empty.

Dirty table, slow service (even though there were few customers), spring rolls consisting primarily of iceberg lettuce, watery curry, greasy tempura, undercooked eggplant and off-flavor tofu.

The menu had nice variety, but none of the dishes we tried were very good.

Peter Rollins, Lowell, loves this place. I especially like the beef jerky appetizer! Other than that I try to try something new every time and have never been dissapointed. Also, they have a GREAT saturday buffet. Folks working outside lowell miss all the other week-day buffets in town, so this is a real treat!

The food here is outstanding! Everyone who comes here with us is skepital at first as the decor does not reflect the soul of this gem. They all leave raving. Check it out!

This is one of the best Thai restaurants on the east coast, even according to native Thai folks. The food is outstanding, authentic, and very spicy. I recommend the lunchtime buffet, which is the only time I've visited the restaurant. The food is quite inexpensive at lunch and the portions are unlimited. Having only experienced the buffet, all I know of the service is fairly limited, but the people are friendly and always checking up to see if you need more water. The restaurant is clean but the atmosphere is informal, about what you'd expect from such an authentic restaurant. You don't really know Thai food until you've been to the Southeast Asian!
