This is hands down the best Italian food I've ever eaten. The menu is varied by season and includes some year round dishes. The restaurant itself is beautiful inside, bustling with activity from all sorts, including families to high class business folks. The wine selection is incredible. I would strongly suggest the Valpolicella! I've gone twice in 2 years, on special occasions, each time been blown away by the specialties they serve. First time I had the duck. It was succulent and served with a sauce that made the flavor explode. Second time I had the beef. Again, amazing. The portions are smaller than what most would be accustomed too, but it is enough to fill you up, espcially with the fresh baked bread and olive oil before the meal. A four-course meal will for 2 w/ a bottle of wine will run about $100 easy, but it is well worth the price.

Sure, it's pricey... but it's also easily one of the best restaurants in Madison.
Some of the prices on the menu really make you wonder, but at the same time you'll be very hard pressed to find dishes with comparable flavor in the area.
If the prices were $3-5 less per dish this place would be an easy 5 star.

3/24/2009: Lombardino's was okay. I would say the food was good but not excellent and the prices were pretty high. Dinner for 4 (including 4 glasses of wine) was just over $122 with tip. The interior hasn't changed (dimly lit and very cramped). Service was adequate but not outstanding. We waited for things a lot. The menu doesn't offer a lot of options, so while I would say the food was "authentic" Italian, it was a struggle for my meat-and-potatoes guy to find something he wanted, including from the very limited pizza selections (pizza is his favorite). Two of us had an eggplant dish that was okay, but sorry to say I make better eggplant at home - even using supermarket eggplant this time of year. One in our party had a roasted chicken thigh thing that he said was good, but $20 for 2 chicken thighs? Portions were "right sized" meaning smaller than most restaurants currently serve (which I liked). All things considered, I won't be going back.
