Randall’s CafĂ© in Cottonwood, AZ is one of those rare gems disguised as an unimposing place to dine. It is so much more. From the moment we walked into the door, we were greeted by a friendly woman, who also served as our waitress. Charlene, or Char, as her friends call her, treated us like family. She had first-hand knowledge of the daily specials, and even recommended a few of her favorites.

My husband ordered the Red Chicken Fried Steak platter. He claims it is the BEST chicken fried steak he’s ever had, which is saying a lot because he orders it frequently when we eat out for breakfast. It was accompanied by two fried eggs, cooked perfectly, and hash browns, so crispy and fresh, they satisfied his crunchy-comfort-food craving for days.

I ordered the corned beef hash, made with fresh grated spuds and chunks of corned beef. Add a splash of green peppers and onion chucks and you have a meal that would make any Irish-born blush with pride. Yes, I was bad and also ordered the deep-fried hash browns and a pancake. They were worth every calorie.

Randall, the chef and cafĂ© owner, came out personally to check on us, asking how we liked the meal—impressive. He claimed that his most popular item on the menu was the Green Chili Chicken Fried Steak. I thought my husband was going to order another meal—down boy.

For desert, we had a fresh strawberry pie that tasted just like the one my mum used to bake. The berries were fresh, the crust flakey and baked to buttery perfection. Fresh whipped cream completed the “not on my diet” ensemble like a well-played concerto, making my sweet tooth sing with utter delight.

To add insult to injury, I took home a cinnamon roll for tomorrow’s breakfast. Yes, it too, was worth every sinful pound I suffered. Taking Char’s advice, I cut it in half and pan fried it to a golden brown—perfection incarnate.

We will definitely remember this place the next time we come to Cottonwood. Fresh food prepared with love and consideration for every reason people eat out—quality that’s rare as a homegrown vegetable.

Generally speaking, the food and service are good. The most annoying thing about the place is that almost all front of house employees call patrons Sweetie, Hon, Darlin, when I am none of these things to those people. Makes me cringe! How about some professionalism? A simple Sir, Miss or Ma'am is appropriately respectful and welcomed.
