Many years ago (I'm local to Northern CA) we used to go there by boat. We'd tie the boat up, go in and eat and drink, fold a few silver dollars inside a $1 bill with a thumb tack and throw it just right to tack the dollar bill to the ceiling. Once, a friend of mine, a great rugby player for the BATS in Berkeley and his pal a very famous quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys threw dollars for hours and drank. We left in the boat and somehow the boat sank on the way back to the boat ramp. I wonder if the signed dollar is still on the ceiling and the boat is still in the river. Great times.

My Brother and I grew up in Walnut Grove but left before we were old enough to have a drink at Al's. In the summer of 2010 we went back to Cali for our 25 year class reunion and stopped by Al's for a drink (or three). We were surprised to find that one of our classmates (Richard) is now 1/2 owner and was working the bar when we arrived. The place is a dive and we absolutely loved it! We had a mix of locals, tourists and some bikers on a ride. One of whom had just gotten out of jail that morning and the first thing he wanted to do was ride to Al's for a drink. Rich taught us how to get dollar bills to stick to the ceiling (a long time tradition there) so we joined up with some tourists until we were all successful. If you are looking for a VERY casual time in a slightly crowded and crazy fun bar then Al's is the place.
