10/03/2010 - Great food and polite service
I was surprised to find a real Mexican restaurant outside my neighborhood (just don't see that kind of stuff where I live). Large portions, great prices. They have a salsa bar with a variety of salsas. The orange one smells like it could be made with habaneros, so be careful. It's not too hot if you only use a little. There is a light brown one that I really like - it has some cilantro and tastes very fresh.
So far I've had the gorditas and puffy tacos, and I'm quite satisfied with both. I'd definitely order them again. The portions are huge and I can never finish all my food. My dad sticks with beef fajitas. They look delicious, and he gets a ton of meat compared to more expensive places. They let him get a combination of corn and flour tortillas, which they make at the restaurant.
They also sell a variety of Mexican beers (right now my favorite is Bohemia, while my dad gets Negra Modelo) and I saw they sell Mexican Coke and Mexican orange Fanta. They even have horchata! I believe they have a happy hour where beer is discounted, which is probably why we go at around 5:30.
What I love about this place is they don't tone down the hot stuff - their barracho beans are pretty hot, but not so hot that they make your mouth feel like it's on fire. The rice is okay (better than what my dad's girlfriend makes), but obviously shouldn't be the highlight of the meal.
I'd recommend this place to anybody living/working near De Zavala. There is another one off McCullough, I think 2 blocks behind North Star Mall.
