There are literally dozens of oriental restaurants in San Antonio, anything from Chinese, Vietnamese, Korean and Thai, that serve lunches, usually with soup, egg roll or fried wonton and an entree over rice, for under $6.
My favorite among them became the newly discovered Golden Bowl on Austin Hwy, which has been there for over 19 years! Own and operated by husband and wife, they provide excellent food that has been consistent over many years of their existence.
I have to admit, that I passed by the restaurant numerous times not knowing that this restaurant exists. There is nothing to see through the front window, as the entry is divided by a wall and a second door leading to the dining room.
The place is not big, nor fancy, yet clean and welcoming. But dont let its humble impression fool you. As soon as you step in, you will be cheerfully greeted by the hostess, who from that moment will make sure that you feel comfortable and taken care of.
Even before you take a seat, you will be surrounded by the wonderful smell and busy noises coming from the kitchen.
I went in just before mid-day closing time to ask for the dinner menu with the intent to be back for dinner, but the charming hostess persuaded me to stay and have lunch.
The lunch menu is simple and common. I had an egg soup for starter, a flavored chicken broth topped with silken threads of egg and garnished with fresh cut green onions.
The Mongolian beef was served with steamed rice and spring roll. The meat was tender and the veggies perfect on the crispy side, the sauce well done with the right combination of hot chili oil, crushed red chili flakes and minced garlic - fragrant and balanced. I didn't regret that I stayed.
Having that in mind, I already planned to visit this place soon again and try their dinner menu.
It happened last Friday. Same welcome atmosphere and scent of a great food made me hungry and ready to eat.
This time I didnt look at the menu. I wanted to be surprised by the chef, and ordered whatever he recommended. While sipping on my soft drink, I had a moment to look around. Yep, this windowless place is not a beauty. The dcor is sparse with a few Chinese motives on the walls, a tiny fish tank with 5-6 gold fishes and a sign: Not for sushi (lol), small display with Chinese knickknacks, little but spotless unisex restroom in the back.
Few patrons, a police officer with his wife and little son, regular customers, I could see that the hostess remembered the details of their likings; an older couple who requested special attention to their diet; group of a good spirited young ladies and a single gentleman with a book. Everyone was served with the same pleasant attention and their special requests were fulfilled.
Then my food arrived. It was combination Lo Mein platter, served in an oval dish covered with a lid to preserve the heat.
Rich with tender pieces of beef, chicken and shrimp, mixed with stir fried noodles, tossed with slightly crisp broccoli, mushrooms, snow peas, carrots, cabbage, onions and tofu, blended with a rich and savory stir-fry sauce. The Lo Mein noodles were plentiful and tasty, and I liked the crunchy texture of the veggies with excellent blend of seasoning. A truly delicious dish.
The restaurant is a gem, and I am very happy that I discovered it.
Golden Bowl is open Mon-Sat 11-3 for lunch and 5-8 for dinner. No credit cards.
