We went for a "drive" and ended in Greenwood in the early afternoon, so decided to have lunch. On the outside of the building, Howard's says it's a delicatessen .What's better than a delicatessen for lunch? At Howard's we experienced some good news and some bad.
My husband had the special - fried shrimp with fries and coleslaw. He was amazed at how large the shrimp were and how many were on his plate. Also said the fries were terrific. The shrimp sauce was definitely not to his liking. Worse was the coleslaw. It was cabbage somewhat chopped, in very large pieces, not shredded as coleslaw usually is and had very little sauce. Basically tasted like a serving of dry cabbage chunks. I ordered a Reuben sandwich. (It IS a delicatessen, right?) The bread was delicious, the cheese and sauce as they should be. The meat? Not so much. Instead of the expected pile of thinly sliced corned beef, there were two thick slices of something similar. It might have been corned beef (kinda tasted like it), but it looked like two pieces of bologna sliced medium thick and wasn't the least bit tender or flavorful.
My husband spoke with one of the staff about his disappointment with the coleslaw and Howard came to our table to express his concern. Also, he brought us a piece of absolutely delicious cheesecake! What a nice gesture. We'd give Howard's on Main a second try, but without the coleslaw or Reuben.
