we live in the area and are so excited for their salad bar!! I believe the owner makes them and we know first hand that lots of locals cannot wait for fall to partake of it. We have never had a bad experience at this restaurant and know the "Tall" waitress . We love her.

man, the previous reviewer should be glad no one sued them for defamation and slander!!! One needs to be careful about name calling and libel.
We thought it was a nice place, good service and quite good food. Guess some people are just not pleased with life in general. Sucks to be so critical about stuff.

This is the first of many restaurant reviews to come as I make my way coast to coast in the U.S and give my first hand opinions to the world on what exactly we're being served up!

First stop is a place called the "Captain's Table" in a small mountain town called Custer, SD. We were bound to make our way through the Black Hills and decided to give this place a try since the sign said they were open. Custer is tourist dominated town, and many of the other options were closed but their sign said "Fri:Sat Salad Bar". Great! we thought as we parked the car and started walking up to the front entrance, (wow would we eat our words). The Captains Table has been a local stable for over 20 years, and the main thing we had to ponder was how the locals could put up with being ripped off for so long! Our waitress was about 6 foot tall and yelled the specials at us, then proceeded to snap in the background at the younger waitresses from over the wall. The ambiance was clutter hell, with about every pattern you could think up drapped on the walls, there were lighthouses, plastic flowers and starfish, ugly little knick knacks, and fake trees. Not to mention the curtains on the walls (not windows, walls) and the absence of sunlight due to the dingy floral wallpaper and worn out dark carpet. As we sat in the booth, we noticed the seats were sticky and old, underneath our table were piles of cracker wrappers and crumbs. Looking at the table, we noticed the salt and pepper shakers were covers in jellied spots of dried up ketchup. The pepper shakers were so dirty, you couldnt see the contents, and that was when we realized this place hadnt been deeply cleaned (or even cared for) in a decade. Wow! And now we have to make it through dinner, gross! As the gargoyle of a waitress appeared, we felt we had better hurry up and order before she got mad. I went with the "local favorite" a slab of prime rib with the soup and salad bar included. The special price tag of the evening on this dish was $24.95 and included a choice of potato, I opted for the baked just to be safe. Upon arrival of my dinner, the waitress slapped down the plate and I decided to give it a go, as scared as I was. I took one bite and noticed the saltiness of the au jus, which was obviously bottled. The baked potato was baked alright, and cold enought to set my stomach running away. It was served with a small side of sour cream, but I decided not to eat it and instead figure out how I was going to finish off the jello mold and mystery meat-meatballs from the salad bar. Oh, did I forget to mention the salad on the salad bar was ice berg lettuce, yes.. plain with nothing... what a treat! As I'm force feeding myself the main course, I over hear the owner/bartender yelling at one of the waitresses from across the room. Excuse me, but thats just appalling and unprofessional. I felt bad for not only the employees but the people who actually come back here a second time around. The place is filthy, cluttered, and the food is bland and overdone at best. If your passing through Custer on your way to Crazy Horse, Mount Rushmore, and the Sturgis Rally, please do yourself a favor and dont stop at the Captains Table! Keep on driving and you'll be thankful for saving your money and your stomach at the end of the day! No Thanks to the Captains Table in Custer, South Dakota. Keep on truckin!
