My husband and I visited this restaurant on 1 January 2013. The service was terrible. My husband ordered the Ham & Cheese Omelet with grits and a biscuit. He had a choice between grits and hash browns.... toast or biscuit. I ordered the smothered hamburger steak with mashed potatoes and green beans. My ordered also came with a salad. I asked when ordering if there were carrots in the salad.... she said no, only lettuce and tomatoes. She also asked me how I wanted my 'steak'... I said medium finally.
She appeared to be the only waitress in the place, and quite possibly had worked all day. I witnessed 3 other customers coming to the counter to ask her things. There was a cook, and a bus boy in the back. Appeared to be no sort of management available.
She forgot who had ordered the salad, and went around the restaurant asking everyone if she owed them one. When she finally brought me my salad, the rest of my order was sitting under the heat lamp.
My salad consisted of what appeared to be a common salad mix that includes carrots and red cabbage. And ranch dressing in these little paper cups like fast food places use. The tomatoes were mushy and unappetizing in appearance. I did not even attempt to eat the salad.
I watched and my husbands order was put up under the heat lamp 3-4 minutes after my order was. I witnessed our waitress going back and forth between the counter and the heat lamp... and saying 'I don't know what I'm doing".... Eventually the bus boy came out, asked the waitress where the order went.... She finally told him table one after he asked her several times.
He brought us our plates. My food looked pretty okay. My husband's order was not correct. he got no biscuit, and he got CHIPS not GRITS. I tasted my hamburger steak, it was cooked to medium well. The gravy was extremely salty, the mashed potatoes were flavorless except for the gravy. Clearly from a box. The green beans appeared to be canned green beans that they added bits of bacon to before continuing to cook them for how many hours it was since lunch that day.
Shortly after our food arrived, our waitress came by our table in a rush, and slapped down our check. Not a word about how the food was, or if we needed refills. We waited for 5 minutes or more after our food was done to see if our waitress would revisit the table.
My husband was charged for the biscuit he didn't get that came with his meal.
Our waitress was also running the register. My husband told her about the problems. She then went to consult with the cook. Who my husband heard her say several times about our complaints "it came that way". Well yeah, that's the point it came that way to our table. Our waitress took no responsibility for the chips in stead of grits. Which is what she wrote on the check. She seemed unfamiliar with the menu. She did not charge us for the biscuit, but charge us full price for the rest of the food. My order came to about $10 before tax and my husbands about $8 before tax.
The lack of caring about customer happiness on the part of all 3 employees working the restaurant was the most disappointing thing of all.

I recently had to plan to meet family 'halfway' from each of our homes. We figured Gary's in Orange, TX, was pretty close -- and right off the interstate. Hadn't eaten there in years but discovered that they are just as good as ever. It's just good 'old school' diner food and service. Too bad places like this have been pushed out with corporate chains and fast food.
