Driving up the 281 toward San Antonio, my friends and I were drawn in by a spray-painted sign that hinted at a rustic ranch, reminiscent of a scene from a mythic Texas wild west film. Inside, the walls were adorned with an eclectic mix of memorabilia, while Ray, a kind-hearted man in an apron, prepared his prideful barbecue with care. I savored a sausage and brisket sandwich that was a tender symphony of smoky flavors, leaving me with a longing for more as we chatted about our travels.
