review_stars 02/15/2013 - Disappointed
Well, let me start by saying that we eat out about once a week all over the GTA. And although we always check the reviews online, this is the first time we have ever been compelled to actually write one. We saw good reviews for this place and that's why we decided to try it on Valentine's Day, but now we realize why there haven't been any good reviews in over a year.

The place wasn't too busy when we arrived around 8pm, and it took the staff several minutes to even notice we were standing there. The table we were scheduled to sit at was still occupied I noticed, not I big deal, so I asked to be seated at a table for two against the wall This is where it immediately went downhill, it took our waitress over 10min to even acknowledge us, and another 10min to get our water. I then had to ask in order to get bread, although I did notice other patrons in other areas being served bread immediately so I knew right away it was our server. The bread was cold and dry to top it off, felt like it was old.

We were given a significantly reduced menu than the one posted on the website, this was expected for Valentine's Day I guess. I did notice they added 15% gratuity to the bill, which I'm not a fan of unless it's a large party. After we ordered our appetizer came pretty quickly and was delicious, unfortunately that's where the good times ended. Our mains took about 40min to arrive, although I saw the owner walking around with the plates about 5-7min before we got them as he walked to the wrong section and went back in the kitchen with them. We had ordered pasta as this is a Italian restaurant and thought pasta would be a good choice. My wife's pasta, Vodka penne, was just "ok" she said. My seafood pasta was terrible, the calamari was EXTREMELY rubbery and scallops were dried out. Basically the seafood was overcooked.

Now I am not one to complain about these things, I will just not return if I don't feel the food was up to par. But the waitress came over asked how it was, so I told her. She then offered to have the kitchen cook up another small batch of scallops and calamari, which I accepted and appreciated thinking that was the right thing to do. We were definitely getting annoyed at this point as she hadn't even taken the bread bowl away, which we had STACKED with plates and pushed to the edge of the table. Well, I continued to eat more pasta but eventually stopped as I wanted to add it all together. About 15min goes by and she returns, seeing I wasn't eating, asks if I'm done and goes to take my plate! I tell her I'm waiting for the seafood she offered, she then looks confused for a second and then explains that the chef wants to see my plate. I tell her to go ahead and take it, she picks up the bread bowl and looks at my plate, and drops the bread bowl and she just walks away and returns 10 min later with the seafood. The seafood was much better the second time, although at that point my pasta was cold and we were already upset. We had noticed two other couples who arrived 5-10min after us already leaving. We just ask for the bill. And yes.....the bread bowl is STILL there!

SO the bill comes....

I immediately ask for a debit machine to pay and she says she'll get one. 10min later she still hasn't come back yet, so I then start looking at the bill in boredom. Well I quickly notice that it doesn't add up correctly? They have charged me 17% tip and 15% tax!!! So I bring this to her attention when she returns and she looks at it in wonder, then says she’ll go check with someone. She comes back 10min later (yes 10) with my bill in her hand, stops.....and walks away again. When she finally returns to speak to me she just says she's taken off the tip and to add it myself in a nasty tone. When I remind her I need the debit machine, she goes and gets it right away and hands it to me saying "Hurry up, another customer needs it"!!!

Well I am just disgusted, we leave her a minimal tip and walk out to head to the car. As we are walking away the owner comes out and screams "Happy Valentine's Day, thanks for the tip!". So I turn around to confirm he's the owner, and I offer to explain our reaction and tip in the hopes that any smart business owner would want to know what happened. As I walk over to him to explain, I get one word out and he jumps down my throat and starts yelling at me. So we just walked away and went on with our night in complete disbelief that someone would treat a customer like that and wouldn't even care to know why we were unhappy.

WE WILL NEVER RETURN AND ADVISE EVERYONE TO STAY AWAY.

Since this happened I told some friends, and have since found out that a friends girlfriend used to work there. She said this was a common thing, that they were told automatically add 17% instead of 15% and then add tax on top. This is why my tax looked to be 15%, when it was actually 13% of my bill PLUS the additional 17%. She also said they asked the servers to write online reviews but some complained, I guess that's why we haven't seen any positive reviews online for quite some time.

IF YOU GO CHECK THE BILL!!!!!!!
