I’ve gone to Christopher’s a few times. The ice cream is good , so it was disappointing when I last visited and the servers, three of them about 18 years of age going on 11, behaved in a very condescending manner. The upshot of my story goes thus. I requested an extra thick vanilla shake as I usually do whenever I go to any ice cream establishment. The girl that took my order proceeded to prepare my shake, and I was able to see that she was barely paying attention to what she was doing. She rushed to make the shake by quickly pouring a portion of the soft serve ice cream into a cup and then swiftly moving to add some milk and whatever else it is that makes a shake.I could tell by the way she was moving so carelessly that she had barely put much effort into making sure that the shake was even a little bit thick. I took the shake and again inquired of the shake was very thick as I had requested to which she responded “ I did the best that I could” in a tone of mild exasperation. Her message could have been very easily followed with “ if you don’t like it, too bad”. As I said, these servers seem too young and immature, in my estimation, to understand that if I customer makes a fairly reasonable request, the server in actually obligated to, in fact, do the best they can to serve the customer. This young lady obviously failed to understand this basic principle of business, and her nonchalant response betrayed an indifference which could only be excused on the assumption that she was not really thrilled with her present career. But the story does not end there. After I had inquired as to whether she had fulfilled my request and paid, I went back to my car with the shake and a small cup of ice cream I had bough for my wife, when I tasted the shake I realized my suspicion were correct. The shake was very watered down as I suspected. I returned to the counter and told the girl that the shake was not as thick as I had expected. The girl repeated that she did the best that she could with a defiant grin on her face. I told her that simply because she felt she had done the best that she could, she had obviously not performed her job accordingly , since she was being notified by a dissatisfied customer that this was the case. At this juncture one of the other young ladies intervened and said that she could give me a refund. Let me point out that at no time were any of these interactions adorned with any hint of kindness or professionalism. It was all done begrudgingly , with highly disrespectful tones, and with great disdain. At one point one the the girls even corrected my accent by repeating a word that I had not pronounced properly. I am not a native of this country so you will understand why this complaint is of any relevance. Anyway, I proceeded to tell the servers that I was not interested in a refund, but that they could simply add more ice cream to my order so that they could complete my order as requested. At this point I believe the girls were simply annoyed with my tone and one of them said that she would not serve me if I was to return again, and refused to add more ice cream to my shake. She then threaten with calling the police, a gesture which I am still baffled with, given that I was not aware that complaint about poor service is a crime . I left the premises but assured the servers that I would contact the manager of their behavior, at which one of the servers responded that she was the manager. I then requested that they write their names in a piece of paper so I could contact whoever was above them. One of the servers proceeded to do this while another server assured me that their higher manager would simply side with them. I asked the servers to show me a form of id to confirm they were not giving me false names to call at which one of them said that my request was not appropriate, in essence trying to make me feel as if I was somehow acting in a lewd manner by asking this, adding insult to embarrassment. I the. left the premises, but not without reminding the servers that I would register this complaint with whoever had hired them to do a job they are not yet mature enough to perform in a professional manner.
I understand that on the surface this may seem as a very minor issue, and perhaps even humorous and insignificant in a grander scheme. But the core of my grievance is that no one should be treated in such a condescending manner and be made to feel embarrassment, simply because they are asking that they get the service they paid for. I also believe that these servers behaved in a way that leads me to think that they either do not understand the value of hard work, or they simply feel a general disdain for anyone who dares question their performance, rather than be mature enough to accept some constructive criticism and find out how they can better serve their customers. In both these areas the failed spectacularly. This also ought to make whoever hired them, think about whether or not this is the direction they want to move their business, not to mention how it reflects in the criteria the employ to hire their talent.
