We went for Saturday night dinner around 5:30 a couple of weeks ago. We hadn't been to Haluwa for a couple of years at least before that. The food was excellent--fresh, flavorful, no heavy dark sauces or mystery ingredients. Haluwa is old-fashioned, Cantonese-"Polynesian"- New England-style Chinese. So if you're looking for Northern Chinese gourmet, this isn't for you!

We had Pineapple Gai Pan, egg rolls, and pork friend rice. The server was friendly, attentive, and expert. I asked for extra bean sprouts in the friend rice--no problem. The rice was a bit oily, but all else was perfection. Many more patrons arrived while we were there, too.

Now, the decor... hasn't changed since the 1980s. The bar... is crowded and noisy. But the food makes up for this.

I hope to go back soon, maybe for lunch, and see how they do at a non-peak time.

The worst Chinese food I have ever had, and I never review... But the food was astonishingly disgusting!

review_stars 02/01/2012 - sickened
OK First off I always expect this place to deliver me crappy food but it's the only place that delivers here so sometimes I'll suffer here or there. Today I think I suffered more than I have ever suffered before trying to eat chinese food. I love the stuff so it has to be literally near rotten to stop me from eating it and I have very rarely thrown any parts of an order away before. Today I threw out an entire order because it was so disgusting and gross in so many different ways. I got a couple of combos and those were the usual sloppy mess they normally are except the food was pretty old. Nearly rotten smell, look and taste to both of them. There were egg shells in the food. Greasy as can be but that has been normal for a while now. I think the worst part was the side orders of crab rangoons and chicken fingers/sweet and sour chicken. These are usually their best items all the time and everything else is slop. Today those items were absolutely disgusting and they were completely freshly made. The crab rangoons just didn't taste right like maybe they use a cheaper wrap now and it's just bland and tasteless, the cream cheese blend inside seemed old and the stuff was all crumbly even though it was hot. The chicken fingers were the most disgusting things I have ever eaten. I ate a couple and immediately noticed they were disgusting and full of fat, brown meat and cartilage. To top it off, I cut open all of them(entire box) to find them all like this and the 7 nugget sized pieces that did have white meat were covered in fat/cartilage or were incredibly old and had dry yellow spots all over the edges. I feel pretty grossed out and sick right now.

***before I could finish this review up I had to run to my sink and puke a couple times. I can't believe this. Absolute worst food and I expected below average to poor food already so this is just absurd. How do you significantly raise prices and cheap down your food this much? Absolutely unedible and nasty. Anyone else saying it's awesome is lying or gets hooked up or something, this place is a nasty local watering hole and it's only getting worse. This time and the time before was awful as well. I would absolutely avoid this place, it's not worth it under any circumstances. I expect bad and now I consistently get rotten crap so I mean what can you really expect to get at this point?? Avoid at all costs.

THE HALUWA ROCKS! It's a great local 40+ watering hole, especially since NH passed the "No Smoking" law. This review is about hangin' out and having a safe, friendly atmosphere to meet up with friends. (I'm not into Chinese food that much, so I won't discuss that.) The bands on Friday and Saturday are usually very dance-able. Karaoke on Thurs is fun, there are some great "acts" every once and awhile. The bartender and bouncer and cocktail waitresses keep their customers happy and safe. So, owners...Just give the lounge a paint job and spiff up the lighting and decor, and I'll give the place a 5!!

I've been in Nashua for 18 years and have eaten here for many more than that. Most of the time, it's great. Yes, the lounge still smell like smoking and it's gross, but the dining room is ok. Its been the same waitress for as long as I can remember and she's good. She's always polite and service oriented. This seems like one of the few chinese restaurants that still serve regular chinese food. Many of the chinese restaurants serve all this foofy food that just isn't the same. I know a lot of people like the other kind of food, but I like the Haluwa, the food, the atmosphere and the service.

I really hate these guys. The worst service ever.
They provide a nice space to eat and drink. But the proprietors have never heard the expression " the customer's always right".

Tonight, I tried to order some food for delivery and the dude hung up on me. I called back and he states he no longer delivers to my location, despite the fact that they delivered here twice in the past month.

I visited the establishment last week, and the waitress cleared the table, removing a drink that was not finished. I brought this to her attention and she came back to me stating that the proprietor determined that since the drink was almost finished I was not due a replacement.

Who the hell do they think they are!

I have been eating at Haluwa since I was a child with my parents. I have lived in a few places around NH and ME and have not found anything quite as good.

I have tried several Chinese food restaurants in the area and was disappointed in all of them except for Haluwa!! I love their food atmosphere and customer service. I recommend to anyone.

This is a very popular website and I feel bad everyone is giving them bad reviews, they do a good business and have been doing well since I have lived in nashua and that is 18 years they must be doing somethign right.

We regulary eat here and are VERY picky and after trying all the chinese places in the area this is where we go.

This is a QUALITY chinese place...not the best atomsphere I will agree but they definitely have the most 'traditional' and best tasting food Nashua.

review_stars 09/15/2009 - Disappointed Haluwa Customer
The food was disgusting, the pork fried rice was soaked in soy sauce, the crab rangoon had absolutely no crab, the peking dumplings were awful, the general gao's chicken was half fat. We couldn't eat a quarter of the food, we have no idea how this place is so popular (or still standing). NOT RECOMMENDED.

It is sad to have to walk through 10 smokers on your way to eat. Not a good atmosphere .

The Food is Greasy, the tables in the reataurant were durty when we sat down. I liked the lounge, better. My Friends, smoke ( I don't) and they got to drink and smoke and really enjoy themselves. AlsoI liked the music, where 40+ can enjoy our kind on Rock& Roll

review_stars 05/11/2007 - The Nashuan Phantom Gourmet!
Horribly smoke-filled very-average-at-best Chinese restaurant.

review_stars 05/06/2007 - MenuPix User
Always an excellent value and the food is some of the best Chinese fare in the area. Service is always prompt. The dining area is decorated in an uncluttered oriental style, but still gives the impression of the Far East.. The lounge area is comfortable, but tends to be very smoke filled.

Seems to be popular but I have no idea why. Food has been disgusting everytime we've tried to eat there and service is horrible.
