Reviews of Beatty & The Beastro

Went there for New Year's Eve 2014 wanting to try something different. I WILL NEVER GO BACK OR RECOMMEND IT TO ANYONE. EVER! It was dirty, lacking in professionalism, slow, and expensive. With only 3 choices on the menu I was expecting better quality. The entree for $10. was nice, however the prime rib for $32 was cold and awful. I called the lady over(she was waitress, cook and whatever else that night) to point out that there was a long black hair in my food, she asked 'What am I looking at?" I told her and she took my plate. I thought I would get new food but she came back and said that it was a new plate and that the hair was only in the fiddle heads. How gross in that?????? She avoided my guest and I not even offering to refill our water or tea.

Worst restaraunt experience ever. The owner/ chef is a miserable lady lacking people and customer service skills and hygiene. Oh and cooking skills.

Love the quirky yet elegant decor and the views of King Square. Helen Buck, chef and owner, is a lovely person, lots of fun. My favourite is the delicious, creamy fish chowder. The fisherman's lunch is also excellent. The desserts are all top-notch.

The experience that I had at Beatty & the Beastro with my fiancee and her grandparents was mediocre at best and appalling otherwise. The prices were high - $25 for entrees while the portions were small and sloppily presented. The greatest disappointment, however, was the food - the salmon was appallingly overdone and the rice burnt (unless the chef was going for a roasted rice look) while the scallops were chewy. A crime against scallops! For such a great maritime region, it's disappointing that the seafood was not delightfully cooked. The lamb was passable, but could have used some more flavouring and the potatoes were undercooked, augmented by a mere suggestion of a garnish (a tiny slice of tomato and a few lettuce leaves). The chicken curry was simply a sauce with yellow curry in it - the best of the lot in the final estimation, however. One is left with an unmistakable impression that Beatty & the Beastro was at one time quite good, but has let things slip, and in so doing, raised costs to cover the falling customer base, and skimped on the overall quality of the food. The space and decor could drive such a great and quirky bistro with fantastic home-cooked, local food, but it feels tired, overdone and lacking in energy and verve. "A ship does not sail on yesterday's wind."

Chester Chicken is the best fried chicken. Not overly coated, but the coating has a nice black pepper bite to it.
