05/13/2014 - matt
On May 13, 2014, my boyfriend, good friend, and myself decided to go to Madiba because we had a sudden craving for African food. My boyfriend, a strict vegan, first asked our server what was vegan. The server looked at us with a bewildered expression on his face, and asked what the difference was between vegan and vegetarian. After informing him, he pointed to the vegetable curry (which he claimed was vegan) and so my boyfriend ordered it. Upon arriving to the table, we discovered that the roti served with the curry was rich with butter!
When we informed him that there was indeed butter on the roti, he glanced at his co-servers before begrudgingly asking us "what is the problem". When we asked him to split the bill after the meal, he got our cards confused, claiming that one card was declined. We had to inform him that he got our cards mixed up during the billing, and then he billed us properly.
We did not leave a tip because we thought he was very rude. When we were three blocks away from the restaurant, he pulled up to us on his bike while two servers followed him, and demanded to know why we left a message for him on the bill. The message simply stated, "Learn the difference between vegan and vegetarian if you want to advance in the food industry".
He began to verbally attack us, calling me a "b-tch" repeatedly while another server began to film our confrontation. After explaining to him why we left the message on the bill, he continually verbally attacked us. He blocked our path on his bike, and continued to yell racial slurs at us.
We will never eat at Madiba, or in Brooklyn again.
