So I went to this bakery today (the Fairfield location) and waited in line outside for about 5 to 10 minutes. There were 2 people inside the bakery and a lady in front of me. As I got inside the store the African American lady that came out of the store told us that they were out of the Señorita bread. The Latina lady in front of me was also told they were out of bread. The man at the counter named Arnel also told me they were out of bread. He actually looked at me and said assertively and waiving his hand at me that they were out of bread. I frequent this establishment and have given rave reviews to my friends about going to buy señorita bread. I have even referred people to come to this shop and buy their food. So I told Arnel in disappointment, “Oh you don’t have any more bread? That’s okay I will get other things at the store.” And just as I was in line to purchase the other items I bought at the bakery, he informed the gentleman behind me that he had 10 pieces of señorita bread that he could have. He didn’t offer that bread to me nor did he offer that bread to the ladies in front of me. And he knew that I want to purchase the señorita bread but offered it to the guy who was in line behind me. I then confronted Arnel after the other customer left and asked him how come he didn’t offer me the bread? And why did he offer it to the person behind me and not me? I even asked him point blank, “Do you think what you did was right?” I said it in our native language Tagalog. And he agreed and said no. So he knew that what he did was wrong but he still did it without thinking how I would feel in that situation. And what is worse is that I am a patronizing customer and frequent this shop to buy señorita bread. I even mentioned to Arnel the I come to his shop a lot and he even told me that he recognized me. I called the shop when I got home and asked Arnel for his bosses’ name. And he asked me if his apology wasn’t enough. He even told me that next time I would be a priority to him. I told him don’t make me a priority but do the right thing for people. Don’t discriminate and don’t have favoritism. Especially don’t do that in front of other customers. This worker definitely needs to be retrained in how to treat customers with dignity and respect. No matter what they look like. I am a boyish looking girl and so I sometimes wonder if this lead to his discrimination.
