I recently (3-3-18) went to the Southern Star Grill in McRae, GA with a birthday group. My sister and I each ordered the Prime Rib Special which according to the menu was to have the salad, bread and one side included. I ordered water with my meal, which I normally do. As the two of us were the first to arrive, they took our order so as not to be rushed when the entire group of approximately 25 to 30 arrived. We were the “LAST” to be served! The prime rib was certainly not up to par. It tasted as if the meat were about spoiled and the au jus sauce had no flavor at all. I ate about five bites of the steak and could not eat any more! I did not want to cause a scene so I ate the salad which had so many French fried onions on it that it did not taste like a salad but like the onions. They completely ruined the salad taste! My small baked potato was cold and dry.
My sister told the waitress that the steak did not taste well and was totally ignored.
After the meal when we went to pay, I told them about this and they said they would take the steak off the tab but since I ate some bread, salad and potato, I would be charged for those. (I was also charged $1.99 for water!!) The steak was supposed to come with these but we were charged for them separately on our ticket. As I mentioned, the meal was the special and was priced at $21.95. My total bill came to $31.05!! I paid $14.50 for water, a small salad and a potato; which means they only credited me with $16.55 as they billed me for gratuity based on the steak price also!!
I made a mistake ordering the special and can’t speak for the other food they have but will not go back. They were very rude to us when we complained about the food.
Their menu as posted on their website is as follows:
(All entrees served with house salad, bread and choice of French fries, sweet potato fries, baked potato or vegetable of the day)
We went to Dairy Queen after leaving there as we were both still hungry!!

Best restaurant in south Ga. Stopped last year on our way home from the Beaches to the Beaches and fell in love. Spent the night in Hazelhurst this year on the way home and drove all the way to the Southern Star for dinner. We were not disappointed. The catfish and sweet potato fries alone were worth the out of the way drive and our waitress was amazing. Can't wait till next year!
