The first of many problems came with we received a phone call from cakes in love 15minutes BEFORE we were going to pick up the cake. Hell, we were basically in the parking lot when we received the phone call from the business asking if we were going to be there to pick up the cake at noon. We said no, we had specifically said the pick up time was 10am. They said they had it written down as 12, which is complete bull because there were three adults standing there when we all agreed on the 10am time. Problem número UNO.
The second problem was that while we sat waiting for the cake to be finished (the earliest they said it would be done was 11) the two girls making it weren't really concerned with ACTUALLY WORKING. I constantly heard their personal cellphones ringing and at one point walked around to see them leaning on the counter playing on the cellphones showing each other whatever nonsense they thought was more important than the task at hand. Aside from this, I know that many smaller businesses don't require a uniform which is ok I don't mind. But I do mind when the women baking a cake and working around food show up in 1) filthy, dirty, torn PAINT SPLATTERED workmans pants and 2) sweatpants that look liked that's what they rolled out of bed in. Wear jeans and an apron at least!
When the cake finally came out it was basically a disaster on cardboard. I think the girl who made it knew they f'd up because even she was timid about showing us the finished product. Quite frankly she should have been ashamed. It was suppose to be a small seahorse with 'happy birthday Sarah' (which Amy had assured us would fit). We had requested the colors blue and green specifically. When the cake came out it was PINK AND WHITE. IT WAS PRESENTED ON A PIECE OF CARDBOARD THAT HAD BEEN COVERED IN COLORED PAPER AND HAD THE WORDS FROSTED ON THE CARDBOARD NEAR THE BOTTOM. WTF???!!! My mothers jaw hit the floor and she didn't know what to say, it was soooo far off of what we had requested.

It is also important to note here that we had a groupon and the cake was already paid for when we placed the order. There didn't seem to be anyone of intelligence in charge for us to ask for our money back so we just took the cake and left assuming the girls there wouldn't give us a full refund anyways.

After we left we took a closer look at the cake and noticed it wasn't shaped as if any time had been taken when preparing it. There were fingerprints in all the indentations and the red food coloring that had been mixed in the fondant wasn't mixed very well so there were red streaks ALL OVER the cake.
The taste of the cake is really the only thing that was ok. JUST OK, NOT GREAT AND DEFINETLY NOT WORTH THE MONEY. You could bake a boxed cake that tastes better, seriously. Spend your money at Fred Meyers or Carrs. The cake was vey crumbly and did not hold together at all. The fondant was just as thick as the frosting underneath, which was at least a good 1/4 inch +. Waaaayyyyyy too much fondant.
And finally la piece de resistance came when my friend was eating a piece of this poorly made cake and found A PIECE OF HAIR IN THE FONDANT. NOT JUST A HAIR SITTING ON TOP OF THE CAKE, NO ACCIDENTAL MAYBE IT CAME FROM US HAIR, SOMEONE ELSES HAIR ROLLED INTO AND STICKING OUT OF THE MIDDLE OF THE FONDANT. IT WAS DISGUSTING. NEEDLESS TO SAY, NO ONE HAS TOUCHED THE CAKE SINCE.
IF THIS IS THE QUALITY PRODUCT THEY PRODUCE WHEN A CUSTOMER PAYS I DON'T WANT TO KNOW WHAT A FREE CAKE WOULD LOOK, TASTE, OR HAVE IN IT. WE WILL NEVER GO BACK AND WOULD NOT ACCEPT ANYTHING ELSE FROM THIS BUSINESS.
I do not feel that I am being overly critical in my assessment. I also work in a customer service/food business and I know how much of an impact negative experiences and responses can have especially on small businesses. But quite honestly I think any potential customers out there should be aware of the sh-tty quality product paying customers have received and the poor customer service and attention to detail the employees at cakes in love provide.
I messaged Amy at Cakes In Love TWICE to hear what she had to say about the mess she called her 'cake' and she didn't respond either time. Instead of using my complaint to showcase any potential professional talents they have at handling complaints they simply chose to ignore it and not respond. Very poorly handled. Be forewarned potential customers in Anchorage, take your business elsewhere.

My family did business with this person and purchased a cake for my birthday. The cake was a HOT MESS. I sent an email to her letting her know the problems I had with the cake. Well the response I had was less that satisfactory.....I'll let it speak for itself:

Not sure how much you know about stacking cakes. Boards have to go under each cake and supports have to hold up the tier or it would sink the bottom layer and crack the design and fondant which would not be pretty.
All stacked cakes have dowels whether they are wooden or plastic or sucker sticks. Anyone who has ever disassembled a real designer cake knows to remove dowels and boards BEFORE serving guests!
And yes I have taken care of xxxxxxxx.
Thanks for your follow up.

I understand that you have been contacted and this matter resolved but I personally wanted to drop you a note as it was "my cake".

While the cake appeared very cute, the fact that it wasn't secure on the base was disappointing. In looking at the pictures on your website and Facebook page it is difficult to understand why the fondant on the cake we received was almost a half an inch thick? The fondant was difficult to cut through. That, added to another half inch+ thick layer of frosting, it was all over when we cut into it, everything came out the sides. Under all of that fondant and frosting was an overcooked, very small, filled cake. Most vanilla cakes I have seen are white, not yellow. I can only imagine, that due to the amount of fondant and frosting is why the Woodstock had to be placed on cardboard and sucker-stick like posts were used to hold it up. By the way, without any mention by your staff, upon pick up, of possible choking hazards being contained in the cake, yes one of my guests almost choked on one of those.

I felt very badly when we cleaned up and 70% of the cake served to guests was still on the plates and went into the trash.

As you know you provide a service that is supposed to add to an event, not take away. I think that you enjoy what you do and that is why you are in this type of business. I would hope that in the future you remember why you started making cakes and take a little more pride in the product you send out the door.

used Cakes in Love for my daughter's second birthday. I was very excited for this because she made my shower caked and it was so cute. She sent me pictures of what she could do and I chose the one I liked. My husband went to go pick up the cake and we were both completely disappointed. The cake was so supposed to be fondant with swirls and flowers. There was no fondant or flowers anywhere on the cake, it was the wrong color and it was lopsided. I tried to call her to discuss the issue and she would not even call me back. She decided to communicate with me through text messages and emails which I thought was very unprofessional. I told her that I would bring the cake back and that she could give me my money back and she told me that she does not do refunds. She told me the only thing she could do was credit me for a future cake which I thought was rediculus because I would never use her services again. I also found out through her business' facebook page that it was her daughters birthday the same weekend and she did an amazing job on her daughters cake. I just thought it was terrible that i could spend $125 on a cake for my daughters birthday and not get the same quality that she would give her own daughter.
