I just can’t stop singing the praises of this burrito…

Chilaquiles (“CHEE-lah-KEY-less”) are a breakfast/lunch comfort food found in many Mexican kitchens, with varying styles and regional varieties. At Reyes Market, somewhere in between a tortilla casserole and breakfast nachos, strips of crunchy corn tortilla are briefly simmered in salsa, then topped with cheese and soft-scrambled eggs. Transforming these simple ingredients into the tantalizing delight of well-crafted chilaquiles takes a special touch; it’s all too easy to have them slip into mushy mediocrity. Reyes Market gets it right every time.

Reyes Market offers delicious plates of chilaquiles but also adds an interesting twist as an option on the menu: a giant burrito stuffed with the chilaquiles, refried beans and rice. There’s something about having all of these items in the same bite that takes it to another level. This monster burrito is savory, crunchy, cheesy, gooey and a little spicy all rolled into one. The version with green salsa is my hands-down favorite, although the red version is also quite tasty.

Authentic Mexican dishes are in abundance at Reyes Market: sopes, gorditas, carnitas, tacos al pastor, carne asada, ceviche, menudo and often pozole. It’s not a chips-and-salsa place with table service and margaritas, but rather a small, clean, family owned, half mini-mart, half-eatery where food is ordered at the counter and brought out to the table (or for takeout).

Ten minutes south of Santa Barbara and just a few blocks off Hwy 101, this place is worth the visit every time.
